Coach Ron Garland was born in 1934 in Hemet , California . He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War Conflict from 1951-1954. After graduating from San Diego State University with a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Arts, he taught at Sunny Hills High School from 1963 - 1964. He began his teaching career at Troy in 1965. During his 29 years of active service here, he taught electronics, ROP, ICT (CLA) and algebra. He also coached track and football. Among his numerous accomplishments, he developed the curriculum for the Computer Logic and Algorithms class (CLA) and built most of the bread boards that are used today.
Coach Garland continued to impact and touch the lives of staff and students long after his retirement in 1994. Many remember his iconic gruff exterior as a substitute instructor. He became a fixture at Troy sporting events. | The Coach Garland Memorial Fund has been created in response to the outpouring of students and families who knew Coach and who want to remember him in a meaningful way. Donations to the fund will support the needs of the Computer Science department (unless otherwise designated by donor), as he was instrumental in the development of the CLA program.
